Furniture News: Furniture.com has acquired FurnitureFind.com

On Oct. 9th, 2007, Furniture.com announced that it has acquired FurnitureFind.com without disclosing terms of the deal. According to the PR, the existing customers of FurnitureFind will have their orders fulfilled. If you look on the FurnitureFind website, many of the products are showing as ‘out of stock’ so the companies are quickly switching to Furniture.com’s model of fulfilling orders through local retailers. The press release is published on FurnitureFind.com but nothing of it is mentioned at Furniture.com, not even on their press page.

Does anyone have any comments on what this means for eCommerce in the furniture industry?

Bombay Furniture will close their stores in the U.S. following the 2007 holiday season. The joint venture of Gordon Bros. Retail Partners and Hilco Merchant Resources have won their bid for remaining U.S. inventory. They have put in an offer, that must be approved by an Ontario court, to keep remaining Canadian locations open.

Globe & Mail recently reported that consumers (possibly one reading this sentence) are shopping for furniture online, rather than going store-to-store in their community.

"About 38 per cent of online buyers visited more than one online store this year before making a purchase, an increase of four percentage points from 2006, the study by J.C. Williams Group found Wednesday.
The survey also showed that online buyers are early adopters of social networking such as writing or reading blogs, customer reviews, and community websites. They're more likely to share their opinions and give reviews online than people who shop the old-fashioned way."

It stands to reason that people prefer to hear opinions and information from their peers as opposed to reading a splashy sales ad from a business trying to make a sale. Tragic End to the Charleston Furniture Store Fire

On Monday, June 18, 2007, Charleston, SC firefighters were battling a fire that destroyed the local Sofa Super Store.

The fire broke out about 7pm in the warehouse, forcing officials to close off nearby roadways. The fire at the Charleston furniture store was still blazing six hours after the first call.

A salesman from a nearby car dealership said he saw firefighters rescue four people from the building.
